| What is Stamp Camp USA? Stamp Camp USA is one of the most successful programs for nurturing young collectors. It introduces stamp collecting from basics, like sorting and handling, up to beginning exhibiting using both creative three-dimensional and traditional formats in a day camp setting filled with hands-on activities. During the activities, the kids earn "stamp camp cash," which they use to purchase donated philatelic items and supplies at the very lively end-of-camp stamp camp auction. Stamp camp culminates with an awards ceremony, where each participant receives philatelic mementos and appropriate recognition and reinforcement. Stamp camp runs leader workshops where the only entrance requirement is a desire to work with children. Through leaders trained in these workshops, stamp camp has been able to expand its program nationally. Stamp Camp USA is the brainchild of Cheryl Edgcomb, the postmaster of Nelson, Pennsylvania. It is a non-profit organization with a 501c3 standing and enjoys collaborative relationships with the United States Postal Service, the American Philatelic Society, the American Stamp Dealers Association, and the American Topical Society. Many community, civic, and educational groups work with Stamp Camp USA to promote stamp collecting as a family activity: 4-H, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, YMCA, YWCA, public libraries, home school networks, foster grandparents, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Experience Works, AmeriCorps VISTA, Centers for Independent Living, Headstart, nursing homes, Communities That Care, and the Federal Prison System. Stamp Camp USA is a non-profit, incorporated organization governed by a board of directors who formulates policy and its chief executive officer who is in charge of operations. |
