Stamp Camp USA Celebrates 15 Years!
On Saturday, May 22, 2010, Stamp Camp USA celebrated its 15th
year of operation. Beginning in Knoxville, Pennsylvania as a small,
grass-roots activity to encourage stamp collecting among local
schoolchildren that had recently been involved with the creation of a
“manatee stamp”, CEO Cheryl Edgcomb, along with 3rd grade
teacher, Sylvia Wood and then 2nd grade teacher, Sue Harer held
their very first stamp camp. Guest judge for the event that day was
Elmira Stamp Club member, Harold VonHagn.
As the saying goes, “we’ve come a long way” since that very first
camp. Last spring, while doing a stamp camp at Westfield Area
Elementary School, where this all began, one of the teachers stopped
by the camp to visit. He remarked to the young campers, “I was at
the very first stamp camp!” True enough, Alan Huyler was at the
very first stamp camp, and when he was asked what his first stamp
exhibit had been, he knew immediately–TRAINS!
Since forming back in 1995, Stamp Camp USA now operates as a
national non-profit 501c3 organization and has continued teaching
children all across America, as well as Cayman Islands and Canada.
The learning fun continued with a special event to celebrate their
accomplishments. With the help of people all across America, kids
were literally “swimming in stamps” as they filled a swimming pool with
postage stamp donations. Seven colors of the rainbow stations
offered exciting activities for the children, which included face
painting, fishing, and beanbag toss. An added excitement was seeing
a Guinness World Record attempt by Edgcomb for the record of
world’s largest rainbows on stamps collection, which was framed and
presented on exhibit pages in a colorful display. Presently in the
adjudication process, Edgcomb is hoping to set the record with her
30-year personal collection of rainbow stamps.
Recognized for their efforts, Stamp Camp USA was presented with a
congressional citation of accomplishment by Mike Glazer, aide to
Congressman Glenn Thompson, who heralded their efforts in
Washington, DC on the House floor, and on his congressional
YouTube link.
